Tree Assessment & Care

Tree Health & Care

Understand what your trees need through assessment, practical advice, and care suited to their condition.

  • Honest assessment
  • Whole-tree review
  • Practical care plans
  • Preservation first

A whole-tree assessment looks above and below the canopy. These observations are for discussing with our team, not for self-diagnosis.
Whole-tree assessment

The canopy tells only part of the story.

A healthy tree depends on much more than what you can see from the ground. We assess four zones to understand how the tree is actually doing.

Canopy and leaves

Leaf size, color, density, and deadwood reveal how the tree is feeding and growing.

Trunk and branch structure

Cracks, cavities, co-dominant leaders, and weak unions point to structural risk.

Root area

Soil heaving, girdling roots, severed roots, and decay at the base affect stability.

Soil and growing conditions

Compaction, drainage, and nutrients shape whether the tree can recover and thrive.

What we assess and treat

Care for every part of the tree.

From the roots to the canopy, we look at the whole tree and the conditions around it. Each category covers a specific concern, so recommendations stay focused.

Overall condition assessment

A full evaluation of the tree's health, structure, and risk that frames every recommendation.

Disease and pest concerns

Identify pathogens, decay, and insect pressure, then build a targeted, measured response.

Soil and root conditions

Compaction, drainage, girdling roots, and nutrient levels that drive decline below grade.

Deadwood and canopy decline

Dead limbs and thinning canopy are traced to their cause, not just removed and ignored.

Structure and support

Cracks, weak unions, and heavy limbs assessed for cabling, bracing, or reduction.

Preventive care planning

Ongoing programs that keep sound trees healthy and catch problems before they spread.

Preserve when practical

Preserve where practical.
Be honest about the limits.

Not every struggling tree can be saved, and not every struggling tree needs to come down. We weigh the tree's condition, the risk it poses, and the realistic odds of recovery before we recommend a direction.

When a care plan may help

  • Sound structure with manageable decline
  • A realistic care plan: pruning, soil work, or support
  • Disease or pest pressure that responds to targeted care
  • Root or soil issues that can be improved over time

When removal needs to be considered

  • Advanced decay or extensive structural failure
  • A tree that cannot recover despite reasonable care
  • High failure risk near people or structures
  • Decline severe enough that support won't reduce the hazard

Structural support can reduce risk, but it does not eliminate it. We are honest about what cabling and bracing can and cannot do.
Signs worth discussing

Observations to share with our team.

These are signs worth talking through, not a diagnosis. Describe what you see and we will assess whether it points to a problem worth addressing.

Leaf changes

Yellowing, browning, or unusual spotting.

Dead branches

Limbs with no leaves mid-season.

Fungal growth

Mushrooms or conks on the trunk or roots.

Bark damage

Cracking, peeling, or missing bark.

Early leaf drop

Leaves falling well before autumn.

Cracks

Splits in the trunk or major limbs.

New or worsening lean

A lean that appeared or grew worse.

Root damage

Severed, decayed, or lifted roots.

A realistic care plan

Recommendations should fit the tree.

Good care starts with understanding why a tree is struggling. We look at the whole picture before recommending pruning, soil work, targeted pest or disease care, or structural support.

01

Observe and assess

We look at the whole tree and the conditions around it before recommending anything.

02

Identify contributing conditions

Soil, moisture, pests, structure, and site history that may be driving the decline.

03

Recommend appropriate care

Pruning, soil care, targeted pest or disease work, or structural support where it fits.

04

Review progress when needed

We follow up to see how the tree responds and adjust the plan if conditions change.

Practical expectations

What an assessment covers.

A tree health assessment is a clear, honest evaluation. Here is what it considers and what your recommendation may include.

What an assessment considers

  • Overall condition and vigor
  • Trunk and branch structure
  • Root area and soil environment
  • Proximity to people and structures
  • Realistic odds of recovery

What your recommendation may include

  • A clear, written recommendation
  • Priorities: what matters most now
  • Possible care: pruning, soil, support
  • Alternatives, including removal if warranted
  • Honest limits of what care can achieve

Most residential assessments are part of our free estimate process. Complex or multi-tree evaluations may carry a fee that is credited toward any work you book.
